Taken at the San Francisco Center for the Book. The place is filled with metal type and this small bin jumped out at me as I thought it was rather ironic.

Very cool photo! I used to be a pressman and used this type of characters on a Heidelberg letterpress. Even with today's technology there are certain types of printing that require this kind of equipment.

It's a very pretty photograph. What is the irony in it, though? The fact that those are @ symbols, which are used in e-mail names these days?

Yes, something that didn't exist with original metal type. The @ symbols had to be created for modern purposes.

The irony is with the old trying to keep up with the new.

That is definitely very ironic. I never knew it didn't exist originally.

Actually its not new, I remember an old non-electric typewriter that my parents had that had the symbol. I don't know what it was used for but its was definitely not created for the internet.
